Watchmaking Laser Welding: Restoring Material with Precision

Today, laser welding is one of the most precise techniques for repairing a damaged watch case or bracelet.

At Atelier Sanders, I use laser cladding and welding to locally restore material where simple polishing would no longer yield satisfactory results.

The goal is not to remove more material to hide a defect, but rather to rebuild damaged areas before restoring their geometry and finish.

Why Use Laser Welding in Watchmaking?

Over time, a watch can suffer from shocks, impacts, deep scratches, or material loss.

It may also have undergone several successive polishings that have gradually altered certain parts of the case or bracelet.

In these situations, continuing to polish means removing even more material.

Laser cladding allows for a different approach: precisely adding material only where it is needed.

This technique can be used to repair:

  • deep impacts and dents;
  • certain scratches that cannot be repaired by conventional polishing;
  • damaged edges and angles;
  • certain material losses on lugs;
  • various bracelet components;
  • certain restorations requiring localized reconstruction.

An Extremely Localized Intervention

One of the main advantages of laser is its precision.

Unlike traditional welding, energy is concentrated on an extremely small area. This allows for meticulous interventions particularly suited to the dimensions and demands of watchmaking.

Material is deposited gradually to reconstruct the affected area with as much control as possible.

This step requires genuine expertise: laser cladding is only the beginning of the restoration.

The added material then needs to be re-worked to restore the volumes and lines of the case.

Laser Cladding and Respect for Geometry

This is where my expertise in polishing and restoration comes into its own.

Adding material is only worthwhile if one is then able to correctly reproduce the shape of the part.

Edges, angles, curves, lugs, chamfers, and various finishes must be worked with precision to achieve a result consistent with the model's geometry.

At Atelier Sanders, laser welding, material working, and polishing are therefore considered a single restoration process.

The goal is not merely to mask an impact, but to restore a balanced aesthetic faithful to the watch.

Expertise Developed on Rolex Cases and Bracelets

Rolex watch restoration represents a significant part of my activity and has allowed me to develop particular experience with their various steels, cases, and bracelets.

Vintage references, in particular, require special attention.

On these pieces, every intervention must be carefully considered to preserve as much as possible the existing material and the specific characteristics of the model.

Laser welding then becomes a particularly interesting tool: rather than multiplying polishing passes to eliminate a defect, it is possible to work locally on the affected area while better preserving the rest of the piece.

From Welding to Finishing

A successful restoration should not draw attention to the repair itself.

After laser cladding, the area is progressively re-worked to regain its shape and then its finish: mirror polish, satin finish, or specific finish depending on the part concerned.

Each intervention is different and depends on the initial condition of the watch.

This is why a diagnosis is carried out before determining the most suitable solution.

Entrusting a Laser Restoration to Atelier Sanders

Significant impact, damaged lug, deep scratch, or loss of material: laser welding now makes it possible to restore pieces for which conventional polishing would quickly show its limitations.

My approach is based on three principles: preserving existing material, rebuilding only when necessary, and respecting the original geometry of the watch as much as possible.
